Merchant Sons

1. What makes Merchant Sons different from other home décor brands?

We are driven by three principles – contemporary design, useful functionality and a high standard of quality – to bring customers homewares that look great and work better.

Contemporary design means that we are inspired by trends in home décor and fashion, with a bias towards a simpler, more masculine aesthetic. Useful functionality comes from researching people in their homes and designing product features that solve annoyances that people have in their homes today. Finally, a high standard of quality is achieved by closely partnering with family-owned factories in Europe and Canada, visiting each factory in person during our days of production and performing quality testing with an independent laboratory

2. Why the name “Merchant Sons”?

As we were starting Merchant Sons, we found ourselves travelling to all corners of the world in search of the best raw materials and suppliers – much like the merchants of years past.

While there are plenty of online buying platforms to help companies source from around the world, we prefer to travel across the world and spend time in the factory. Our favourite moments while starting Merchant Sons include talking about weaving technique with the 80 year old patriarch of a Portuguese mill, and laughing with Turkish seamstresses as they got their pictures taken by our photographer. We believe we represent a new generation of merchants and the name “Merchant Sons” captures that aspiration of ours.

Bedding

1. Where is your bedding made?

All of our bed linens are manufactured in Guimaraes, Portugal, by a third generation, family-owned mill.

2. What is the fabric content of your bedding?

Our bedding is made with 50% long-staple Egyptian Cotton and 50% Tencel (also known by the generic name, lyocell). We tested various thread counts and weaves before landing on a 300 thread count, single-ply percale weave – a good balance of breathability and durability.

3. Why do you use Tencel in your bedding?

Tencel has been used widely in apparel, especially athletic wear, for its moisture management, softness and durability – properties that we think are also important to bedding but have been mostly ignored by traditional home décor companies

4. How can I trust the technical claims for your bedding?

Our bedding was analyzed by an independent lab in the UK with over 100 years of experience in quality testing, together with comparable department store bedding (i.e. similar or higher price point, same thread count).

Results showed that our bedding was better at breathability and moisture management, with 50% of applied liquid penetrating the fabric immediately, while liquid pooled on our competitors’ product. Our bedding is also 2.4x more resistant to abrasion than department store sheets, which means you get sheets that hold up better to wear and tear.

4. What are the size dimensions of a bedding set?

The dimensions of our sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases are below:

Queen

King

Duver cover

234 x 244 cm

274 x 244 cm

Flat sheet

234 x 269 cm

279 x 269 cm

Fitted sheet

152 x 203 cm

198 x 203 cm

Pillow case

51 x 81 cm

51 x 102 cm

5. Can I mix and match within a bedding set?

Our website allows you to mix and match colours across all bedding product types within the same size.  For the pillowcases, you will need to select one colour for all pillowcases in the drop-down menu, but at checkout, you can specify other colour combinations in the Order Notes and we’ll take care of it.

6. How should I care for my bedding?

In general, you can machine wash the bedding in warm water, on a gentle cycle and can dry on low or medium temperature. Do not bleach. Iron on a medium setting (for extra credit – if you iron your sheets, we want to meet you).

To avoid wrinkles without ironing, follow these tips:

  • Only wash and dry one set of sheets at a time and avoid rolling them up into a ball when you load into the machine. This avoids getting the sheets twisted while in the machine which can lead to wrinkles
  • Remove the sheets from the dryer when they are still a little damp and put them back on the bed right away. Leaving them in the dryer sets the creases as they stay bunched up in the dryer
  • If you end up leaving the sheets in the dryer and they are wrinkled when you make your bed, you can use a spray bottle to lightly dampen the sheets again. Smooth the sheets out with your hand and let it air dry for some wrinkle improvement

To make your bedding last, consider the following:

  • Our custom weave of cotton and Tencel enables 2.4x more resistance to abrasion than department store cotton only sheets of the same thread count
  • To preserve their life even further, avoid harsh detergents, ones with brighteners, and never use bleach. These chemicals can damage the cotton and Tencel fibres
  • Avoid high heat or over-drying your sheets as this can also damage the fibres

Towels

1. Where are your towels made?

Our towels come from the Aegean region of Turkey. The factory was founded 20 years ago and more than 20% of its plant employees have been with the company since inception.

2. What is the fabric content of your towels?

Our towels are made from 100% combed Turkish Cotton. Combed cotton means that the raw cotton is combed for weak, shorter fibres before being spun into yarn. This ensures that only the longest, strongest fibres remain. With longer, thicker loops, we increase the surface area of the towel, making it more absorbent.

3. How can I trust the technical claims for your towels?

Like Merchant Sons’ bedding, our towels were analyzed by an independent lab in the UK with over 100 years of experience in quality testing, together with comparable department store towels (i.e. similar or higher price point, same grams per square meter).

Results showed that our towels absorbed 60% more liquid and dried itself 10% quicker than the department store towels. We also achieved the highest grade (5/5) in a standard test for resistance to colour fastness.

3. What are the size dimensions of your towels?

Hand towels are 40 x 60 cm, while bath towels are 70 x 137 cm.

4. Can I mix and match within a towel set?

Yes, you can select different colours for each of the four towels in the set. We only have two colours right now, but more are coming!

5. How should I care for my towels?

Towels should be washed in warm water, on the gentle cycle with like colours. You can use non-chlorine (colour-safe) bleach, as needed. When drying, do so on warm setting and gentle cycle.

 To maximize absorbency:

  • Only use fabric softener every 3 – 4 washes (or not at all). Build-up from the softener can reduce the fibres’ absorbency
  • Make sure your towels are completely dry when you remove them from the dryer as damp towels can cause mildew, but don’t over-dry them as high, prolonged heat can damage the cotton fibres and reduce absorbency

 To keep your towels soft:

  • Avoid using too much detergent – the residue is often what causes stiff towels
  • Add a bottle cap amount of vinegar to the rinse cycle to get rid of detergent residue
  • Add a tennis ball to the dry cycle to fluff up the towels

To make your towels last longer:

  • Our combed cotton towels will have less pilling as only the strongest fibres remain after the combing process. To further minimize pilling, only wash towels with other towels. Having different types of fibres (e.g. the short, rough fibres in your jeans) rubbing against the towel in the wash can cause pilling

Stain Resistant Cushions

1. Where are your stain resistant cushions made?

Our stain resistant cushion covers are made by a sewing workshop in our own backyard – Scarborough, Ontario. The fabric is imported from China and the Crypton Incase treatment is done in Kings Mountain, South Carolina.

Poly-fill cushion inserts are filled in Toronto, while the white covering and synthetic down inserts are made in China.

2. What is the fabric content of your stain resistant cushions?

Our cushion covers are made from polyester, a particularly strong fibre that endures a lot of abrasion, (i.e. rubbing) while still being soft to the touch. This is why many upholstery products, such as sofas and cushions, are made from polyester.

To further enhance our cushion cover’s functionality, we treated the fabric with Crypton InCase  - one of the industry’s leading providers of fabric treatments. This treatment can be found in hospitals, hotels, restaurants – even in the Buckingham Palace and the White House – and is the greenest stain resistant formula in the industry. Entire rolls of our fabric are treated at Crypton’s facility in Kings Mountain, NC. The fabric rolls are fully immersed in the treatment so that each fibre is impacted at the molecular level to increase surface tension, which allows liquid to be more easily released. This is a better alternative to a coating or spray which sits on top of the fabric as a barrier and can fade over time with abrasion.

Both styles of cushion inserts are filled with polyester with a cotton cover.

3. How can I trust the technical claims for your stain resistant cushions?

The treatment used on our stain-resistant cushions achieved top scores in various industry standard tests, including oil, water and spray repellency, cleaning, colour rubbing and abrasion. The Silver Ion Technology used in Crypton Incase also enables it to resist bacteria growth. All technical specifications related to Crypton Incase can be found here on their site

We also informally tested the stain resistance by pouring coffee and red wine on our cushions and observing the repellency. Any remaining residue could be removed with a damp cloth.

4. Does the stain resistant treatment change how the cushions feel to the touch?

No, there is no change to the hand feel of the fabric after stain resistant treatment. Our gold-coloured fabric is a thicker, looser knit so it feels similar to a soft canvas. All other colours are tightly knit and have a very soft finish, like velvet.

5. What is the difference between the poly-fill and synthetic down cushion inserts?

It’s a bit hard to explain, but suppose you do a karate chop on these cushions: A poly-fill cushion will bounce right back to a full, plump shape, while the synthetic down cushion is malleable and takes on the shape that you’ve created.

Some people prefer one style over the other, so we thought to offer both.

6. What are the size dimensions of your cushions?

The cushions come in a square 46 x 46 cm and rectangular 36 x 61 cm and are designed to fit with our inserts.

7. How should I care for my stain resistant cushions?

For the cushion covers, we recommend simply spot clean with a damp cloth should you spill anything on them.

The cushion inserts are machine wash on a warm, permanent press setting and then tumble dry on low heat.

Sweatshirt Products

1. Where are your sweatshirt blanket and cushions made?

The fabric is custom knit to our specifications in Scarborough, Ontario and then custom dyed in Ajax, Ontario. Production of the blanket and cushions are done in a sewing workshop, also in Scarborough.

Poly-fill cushion inserts are filled in Toronto, while the white covering and synthetic down inserts are made in China.

2. What is the fabric content of your sweatshirt blanket and cushions?

The sweatshirt fabric content depends on the colour in order to achieve the ideal heathering effect as different fibres adhere to dyes differently. For the light grey cushion, it is 50% cotton and 50% polyester. For charcoal and sand, it is 75% cotton and 25% polyester.

Both styles of cushion inserts are filled with polyester with a cotton cover.

3. How can I trust the technical claims for your sweatshirt blanket and cushions?

Our sweatshirt fabric has been pre-washed to prevent shrinkage at home. Analysis by an independent quality testing lab showed there to be less than 3% shrinkage upon first wash.

5. What are the size dimensions of your sweatshirt blanket and cushions?

The sweatshirt blanket is nicely oversized at 147 x 203cm – perfect for wrapping yourself in.

The cushions come in a square 46 x 46 cm and rectangular 36 x 61 cm and are designed to fit with our inserts.

6. How should I care for my sweatshirt products?

Like your favourite hoodie, all sweatshirt products can be thrown in the washing machine on a cool setting and then tumble dry on low temperature.

Candle

1. Where are your candles made?

Candles are hand-poured by a workshop in Markham, Ontario. The glass is sourced from China.

2. What are your candles made of?

Merchant Sons’ candles are made from 100% non-GMO soy wax, with a cotton wick and all-natural essential oils. Due to the nature of essential oils, you may see some smudges on the glass or oil spots on the top. These are an expected result of natural oils and do not affect the candle’s performance. Using synthetic fragrance avoids these imperfections but would mean an inferior candle, in our opinion.

Our scent is a custom blend of cedar wood, fir needle and patchouli, concocted by one of our co-founders, Greg Robson.

3. How can I trust the technical claims for your candle?

We informally tested the candle in our homes, noting a 50 hour burn time and 15 feet scent thrown. If you find any major difference in your candle’s performance, please let us know by emailing service@merchantsons.com.

4. What are the size dimensions of your candle?

This is a 7 oz. candle with a height of 8cm and base diameter of 7cm.
